I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all new and current families to Dorchester Youth Hockey.  Although our summers seem to get shorter each year, I hope everyone has had an enjoyable and relaxing season.  As we approach the 2009-2010 hockey season, it’s important that we recognize that the number one goal of our program is to ensure that all players have a great hockey experience throughout the season.  Our expectations are that the players will further develop their skating, passing, stick-handling and shooting skills, will embrace the essence of teamwork, enhance their understanding of the game, and most importantly, have a lot of fun.  As many of you are aware, the season stretches from September through April, and we appreciate your commitment as parents, to afford your child or children the opportunity to participate in what we consider a tremendous youth hockey program.

Our program is run by a Board, made up of volunteers, that oversee every aspect of our program from registration of players, organizing tryouts, managing player/team placements, league selections, coaching, fund-raising, organizing skills clinics, scheduling of practices, negotiating ice contracts, establishing tuition fees, disbursement of funds and scholarships, managing/ordering equipment, proving representation to our Mass. Hockey District, and providing oversight to our Learn-to-Skate program.  Our by-laws require four "open" meetings each year, including our annual meeting at the end of the season where we elect board members and review our financial report. Please check the website for Board meeting dates. Your feedback is critical to the ongoing success of our Program.  The dates and times of the “open” Board Meeting will be posted on our website and we encourage you to attend and discuss any questions, concerns or provide any suggestions with respect to our Program.

One last point that I would like to make is to acknowledge all of our team coaches and the investment being made by them this season.  All of our coaches have participated in USA Hockey clinics and have a firm understanding of the league rules, code of ethic standards, and teaching responsibilities.  That being said, it is important to note that all of our coaches are volunteers as well, and have committed much of their little free time to their team and our program.  Our coaches spend many hours “off-ice” planning and organizing practices, therefore, it is just as important that players are attentive and attend practices and Skills Clinics on a regular basis.

On behalf of the entire Dorchester Youth Hockey Board, we would like to sincerely thank the parents, players and friends in our communities for your commitment to such a wonderful sport.

Matt Sweeney
President
